For the competitive and passionate cyclist, Ciocc is a mark that recalls the beginning of the great Italian tradition of hand crafted racing frames. It was in the early 50’s that Ciocc, working out professional ranks throughout the 80’s, picking up extraordinary success such as the 1977 World Championships and gold medals in the 1980 Moskow Olympic games.
Professional teams such as Santini Krups, Italbonifica Navigare and many others reached international notoriety and fame. In 1991, Ciocc founder Giovanni Pelazzoli retired and “handed down the torch” to his long-time apprentices, Stefano Bonati and Cesare Biondi, thus guaranteeing the brand the continuity of its original style and “philosophy” to the art of frame-building, going into a new era.

Carbon fiber has become the material of choice for high-performance frames and for a reason. It is lighter than aluminum, stronger and lighter than steel and stiffer than titanium. Thus, it has an unmatched strength-to-weight ratio. Just like any other materials, there are many different grades of carbon. Ciocc frames are made with uni-directional carbon fibers, the highest grade, which generate the performance, liveliness and smoothness you would expect from a top quality racing machine. But this is only the beginning of the story. True to its traditions, Ciocc is also at the cutting edge of manufacturing technology and processes available today.
Traditional molding processes involve the use of plastic air bag or bladder technology. Such methods have limitations when it comes to tightly curved internal surfaces such as the bottom bracket area, head tube and seat stays junctions, suffering from uneven compaction of the carbon fiber layers during the molding process. During inflation, the plastic air bag cannot conform evenly to the inner radius without creasing. These creases lead to wrinkles forming in the inner carbon fiber layers since the compaction pressure is uneven. Within the wrinkles, voids form that can lead to de-lamination and stress-fracturing. Ciocc employs a brand new “ SMOOTH WALL TECHNOLOGY” now used in the world’s finest frames. It does away with the bladder method completely. Internal layers and surfaces are as smooth and free of wrinkles as the outer surface. It yields better conformity of the carbon layers and it reduces voids significantly. The result is much greater material strength and minimum risk of stress fractures. Laboratory testing and simulations indicate a potential 20 to 30% increase in stiffness in all critical-stress areas!
Ciocc framesets are routinely tested to the limit, to determine the fatigue and impact performance of the carbon fibers. Laboratory testing however, is only part of the picture. Over decades, Ciocc has cultivated and maintained close contact with elite riders and competitors at all levels, who provide real world performance testing of every model we enjoy on the road today.
